How air-conditioning eats a façade: ceiling void and outdoor units come first

In Baku the client sees white stone and wide glass in the render. When the job is finished, three outdoor units, twisted pipes and a yellow water stain sit on the street façade. Inside, the ceiling has dropped 15 cm, the lamp is off-centre, the compressor is audible in the bedroom. That is not “the installer put it there”. It is air-conditioning that was never treated as an architectural decision.

Absheron summers are long, west glass is harsh, dust clogs filters fast. Cooling the house around the clock will be the rule, not the exception. So units, shafts, drainage and ceiling void must be cut as early as the 3D visualisation. The picture sells a decision; the dimension saves the façade.

The outdoor unit is the face to the street

One wall unit per room looks cheap. The façade becomes a billboard and the neighbour complains about noise. The better path is a service balcony, roof, yard room or a screened rack — reachable for wind and maintenance, unreadable from the street. On a Baku street, “we will hide it later” means it will never be hidden. If a villa project reads the wind, it must also read the outdoor unit: khazri carries sound and vibration through the wall into the house.

• The drain path: condensate down the façade ages the stone in a year.
• Service: ladder and standing room for filters and gas, not across the guest terrace.
• Noise: a compressor under a bedroom window cuts sleep.
• Glass front: a west salon raises cooling load — shade and glass choice are part of the budget.

The ceiling void is not born after the render

Ducts, silencers and trays want room inside the ceiling. That room shows up at the stair head, the window head and the door lintel. If BIM does not find the clash, the installer drops the ceiling and the room becomes another house. So BIM architecture is not only for walls; it is the path of air. Promising a ceiling height from a render and then eating 20 cm is a silent debt to the client.

When the flat has no shaft

In a block the outdoor unit goes to a balcony, a façade cut-out or a shared roof. Building management and neighbour consent are documents, not a later argument. Inside, a refrigerant pipe should not crawl across the living-room ceiling. A renovation project must lock that path before demolition. Otherwise a place for the unit is hunted after the tiles are already broken.

What to demand on a sheet

Writing “there will be air-conditioning” does not protect the façade. Unit plan, shaft, drain, ceiling cut and noise distance belong in the working set.
